About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the police have arrested the murderer, and that the body of the dead woman was found in the middle of the street. The murderer, in a soliloquy, tells the police that he will kill them all if they arrest him. He also tells them that he has buried explosives around the building and on his body. He tells the captain of the police to step back so that he can blow the head off the murderer with one bullet. The captain is afraid, but the murderer tells him that there is a nice place nearby for snipers, but he thinks he can kill the man with one shot. He asks the captain if he wants to be his hostage, and the captain replies that he does, but that he must be responsible for the other officers. The statue of the murderer has a scratch on its face, which the statue recognizes as a scratch from the bullet that killed the murderer. The statues are silent, which means that the statue recognized the murderer as he left the building. When the statue is silent, the statue must have recognized the man as the murderer entered the building, and so the statues stare at him, which is a sign that the statues recognize him.
