About This Chapter
The next day, Dr. Manette tells the audience that he's already become stronger than ever. He tells them that if they run into him alone, he'll make them drink his "health drink" . But if they manage to escape and get captured, they'll be made into "his health drink" for the rest of their lives. He also tells them not to fight with him, because he doesn't want to appear in the way of them fighting. He says that he didn't show up in front of them to fight them. He apologizes for interrupting their stage performance, and the school has paid ten times the repair fee. He's not a tyrant, he says. He wants to have a "lamentary chat with you" , and he wants to talk about soul separation. After being possessed, he explains, he has changed many bodies in order to live longer. The vessel isn't perfect, however, because it's only a temporary thing. Even if he gets a beautiful young body, it'll only last for an instant. Most bodies age rapidly, so he needs to find a new body once they're gone. He explains that he can put his soul into anyone's body in exchange for a better life. In other words, he can use his money and power to make you a better person.
