This chapter opens with the arrival of the Governess, who has just returned from a trip with Cai Mingyu. The Governess tells Cai that she has not yet had dinner and that she is afraid of loving him. She tells him that he has adopted a number of dogs since she left him, and Cai tells her that they have taken a long time to choose the one that he will wear tonight. She asks him if he likes it, and he replies that he does, and that they will wear it tonight. He tells Cai to go however he likes, as he has washed it, but Cai tells him not to worry, as they have chosen the right one. He then asks Cai if he is afraid, and she says that he is, but that he gave her the dog away in the beginning, and now Cai has adopted many of them. Cai is shocked, and says that Cai gave him the dog because he was afraid that Cai would love him. Cai says that this is a shock to him, because he had not expected Cai to adopt so many dogs since he left. He says that they chose the one he would wear tonight because he has been wearing it for so long. Cai asks him what bothers him
