About This Chapter
In this short scene, the police sergeant tells his lieutenant that something is coming for him. He tells the lieutenant that he's not hanging around there anymore, and that the stench of death clings to his nostrils with "little skeleton hands" . The lieutenant tells the sergeant that the mutilation took place on the site, but that the actual killing took place in the forest. He asks the doctor if he can take blood samples from the tree, and the doctor says he'll do it. The doctor tells him that the woman who controls the electricity is the one who killed the mutilator. She also controls the cargo, and travel, and everything in the town is at her pleasure. The sergeant tells the doctor that he grew up in this town, and he remembers that there were still "six hundred people here" who were sent back to the country when they were "trained in moscow" , but now they're back in the country. He's a police private, so he can hear the accent in the doctor's voice. The narrator tells us that the narrator is writing a book about how he created himself, and how he can still live in the world of the past and save people in the future.
