About This Chapter
In this short scene, the audience is introduced to a young woman named Bethe, who has been raised by three mothers. Bethe tells the audience that she is now 24 years old, and that she has come to live with her three mothers because she is afraid of losing her mind. She asks Bethe if she has anything to say to her, and Bethe responds that she does not have anything interesting to say, but that she would like to introduce herself to Bethe as she sees fit. She tells Bethe that she loves her and everything about her, but Bethe needs space to go, so she tells her that she will show her who, of everyone she knows, has more power over her heart than the king. She says that she always threatens him, but she never knows what that is to know, and she tells him that he must leave her and never come back, for he is not a fairy, but a man who kidnaps children and forces them to dance with him every night to keep an eye on him. He is rigid, she says, and he is "hetero - rigid," meaning that he does not want to be mixed with humans.
