In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who have been introduced in the previous chapters. The first person we meet is the protagonist of the previous chapter, a young girl named Emma. Emma's father, Mr. Roberts, is in the process of collecting the money for his daughter's murder. He tells us that Emma had a choice between killing herself or going to the vulture, and that she chose the latter. He also reveals that Emma was a member of the Church of England, which means that she was raised in the Catholic Church. He says that the Church has become corrupted and that it is time for a new name.
