About This Chapter
The next morning, the Governess meets with her son, who tells her that his father broke the barn, but that he's fine. The Governess thanks her son for his sacrifice and asks him to contact the Jacks. She tells him that they've overrun the family's farm, and that she's helping keep them safe by keeping them on their guard. She also tells her son that she has seen the original research on behemics, which was done by Dr. Kratzer in the early 1900s. He's the only person who's ever done it, and he coded the new devices into his own body. She asks him if he'd like to help protect the family from the jack attack. He says he'll do so if it means that other boys like Alen will live. He explains that the oldest of the children is now an adult, and they're just hungry, throwing and killing people. He tells her to follow him to the watchtower, where he found another jack, and to look for the runaways.
