About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a flashback to Darnay's meeting with the Governess. The Governess tells Darnay that she has made him kill her husband. Darnay asks her what has happened, and she tells him that she is unable to pull the trigger. She tells him to leave the room, and he does so. He tells her that he has killed Darnay in self-defense, and that he is leaving the room to go to a surprise birthday party. He asks for help in finding the fourth body, and the man replies that he found it in the parking lot of the building on the 2nd floor. He says that he remembers feeling hesitant when he first got the body, but that his body is stronger than a beast. He wonders why he should allow himself to be mechanized, and wonders how his mother would feel if he returned from the war as a monster. He also says that the army is making the transition from being a fighting machine to being a mecha-nization unit. The man says that this war will change Darnay, and reminds him that it is not too late to change his ways. He adds that he will not let the war change him. He reminds the man that he was only clinging to his humanity because he was afraid of what would happen to him if he did not. He feels that he can see everything that is going on around him, and is amazed at the speed with which he is able to see. He thinks that he and Darnay are no longer playing in the dark, and feels that they no longer have to hold each other's hands in order to play. He realizes that Darnay is making his bullets and that they are
