About This Chapter
It's been three years since Hirokazu graduated from high school, and now that he's gone to college, he wonders if he and his friends have wasted all their time. He tells them that they're wasting their time by hanging out with people who don't pay attention to them. He also tells them not to worry about the fact that they haven't been able to get into any of their top-tier colleges yet. He's not worried about that, though, because he'll be back in high school with him for another year. He doesn't want to go back to his old life, he says. He wants to become a writer, and he thinks that if he has another year, he can make it. He compares Aoshima to the guy who threw away his future to save the lives of his classmates. He says that he tried to help people in need once, but he couldn't stand the pain of helping someone else. If he'd tried to do something for himself, he thinks he would have been worth less. He wishes he could say something like that to his friends and family. He asks them to read the letter he got from the doctor. The doctor tells him that after he becomes a vet, he will go live in Africa as a volunteer. He predicts that he will still love him in ten years.
