About This Chapter
The next morning, the smell of the paste is so strong that it's hard to tell what's going on. When the owner of the cafe, pierre, tries to explain, taruna says that he's just following the recipe from his family. He doesn't have a gas mask with him, so he just mixes the paste with the ground chillies and sniffs the smell. The smell is strong, he says, and he wonders how long it'll last. He wonders why pierre took down his French flag, and why ami was being cornered so far. The owner says that it was angelo who asked for the sambal terasi to be made, and that's how it started. He asks taruna to keep his spirits up until he makes the best sambal possible.
