In this chapter, we learn that the reaper's conscience is still intact, even though he has lost his ability to reason. He still has the ability to make moral judgments, which is why he was able to teach him to take the soul of a dead body. The reaper, however, is still afraid of death, and so he does not make the kind of face that a human would make. This is because he is afraid of hurting his own feelings, and therefore he is not able to make a face like a human.
