"Chain dim inhuman me" is the title of this chapter's soliloquy. It's a quote from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, in which Hamlet says that he believes everyone has a "secret that includes" him. In other words, everyone knows that he's been keeping a secret from everyone since he was born. The narrator says that the secret that everyone knows about him is that he doesn't like to be around people who have money and power. He's worried that people will find out about his family's wealth and power and that his school will be in the spotlight because of it. He thinks that's because of his father, who is a member of the school's governing board. He also thinks that students with good family backgrounds don't get as much attention from the other students because they're not as rich and powerful as their parents are. So, the narrator says, it's not possible that he looks like he does. He wonders how anyone could look like that. He says that these sorts of things happen to him all the time, and that he can't really handle them if no one knows about them.
