In this chapter, we learn that the protagonist's teacher has ordered him to do something that will help him survive the night. He's doing this because he's learned how to learn emotions using the shoe covers, and he wants to learn more about them. But he doesn't know how to do it, because the smell of the covers might trigger a reaction in the people in the room, and the smell might cause them to freak out. So, he cooks for them, and they eat.
