About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's leaving the orphanage because the headmaster won't let him go without receiving some money. He wants to know how much money the headmaster bought him for, and how much he'll have to pay back. He also asks if the headmaster has any money of his own. The narrator says that he doesn't think he has any, and that the headmaster got ripped off. He's going to leave now, he says, because he wants to be alone. He asks if he can be called "alexander" , and if he has ever asked for anything from the headmaster. He says that if he had asked, he would've been touched by the same way. He adds that he was planning to leave the orphanage on his own when he turned 17 years old. It's the "most precious day" of his life, he tells the headmaster, because it's where he came from. He tells him that he has been sending signals to the headmaster for months, like throwing away his shoes, building a lodge for workers, and cutting his hair short because it didn't suit his tastes. The headmaster says that his plan is to get married, but the narrator knows that's not going to be the case, since the headmaster will be raising other orphans. He then asks why the headmaster hasn't said anything, and the narrator says he wants more time to explain himself. If the headmaster stops him one more time, the narrator tells him, he will love him forever, and he will probably do so for the rest of his days.
