About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he didn't really want to hurt Sosaku, but he ended up hurting her. He tells us about a girl friend he used to hang out with, who was quiet, and who was a bit of a problem with conversation. The girl's coach was very attentive to her, but she never gave up on the game. The narrator admits that he's not a good talker, and that's how he got into this situation. He'd been hanging out with the girl at practice and watching her play basket ball. One day, she told him she wanted to try and score at a game, and he was so excited that he was going to show her. She wrote a note to the narrator, saying she wasn't a good conversator, but that she'd be happy to tell him how she felt. After that, the narrator says, he "became tice" . He was the captain of the girls' basketball team in eighth grade, and this was when he started hanging out more and more with other girls in the neighborhood. He says that the reason he came was because the distance between them grew, and because he was not "fit to love anybody" , which is why he was hanging out so much with Soju. So, he tells us, he still wants to stay with her, and protect her with everything he has.
