The crowd is made up of the two girls, who have come to visit the shrine, as well as the two young men who have joined them. The young men are dressed in their best clothes, and the girls are dressed as shichi, or warriors. The narrator tells us that the young men have gathered to celebrate the end of the year and to wish each other good luck for the new year.
