About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator laments the ruin of a beautiful woman in his own land. He laments that he is old and alone, and that the people of his own village have not been able to prosper and flourish for so many years. He wonders why the goddess of the mountain has been unable to express her soul in such a way as to make her seem less ugly than she is. The villagers believe that she has been killed by the sun, and they set fire to her mountain in order to kill her. The narrator resolves to seek refuge in a mirror at dusk, but he knows that he will never be able to see his own reflection in the mirror.
