The chapter opens with a description of the locked room in which the Governess's father was found dead. The Governess tells us that she went to visit the man to find out what he was up to, but he refused to give her his name. When she opened the door, she found him dead in his bedroom. She says that she hasn't told anyone that she locked the room and gate in case they wanted to use it as an entrance into the mansion. She's glad to hear that she's back on her feet, because she was worried that she might lose her things. She tells us she kept her moth as a memento of her mother's death, but now that her mother is dead, she doesn't have anything to keep it. She gives it to her maid, who tells her that it reminds her of the basement where her mother was imprisoned. The maid says that the name of the room reminded her of a famous actress named Katherine Fuchie. The two of them go for a walk together, and the narrator says that he still trusts her.
