In this chapter, Shmoop explains that his mother is right about his ugliness. He tells her that he wants to show her the stage so that she can see how ugly he really is. He says that theater is about making the audience believe that the actors are real. He also says that he just ran into his mother in the hall and she stared at him. He wants her to know that he doesn't want to tell her about his secret. He asks her to show him the script so that he can decide whether or not he should be allowed to perform. He then asks her if she is aware that she cannot perform the part of the protagonist in the play. She says that she is not aware of it. He suggests that she read the script and then make a decision. She tells him that she has a sad news and that she will not be able to perform the role of the heroine
