About This Chapter
When the narrator asks what she did for the summer break, she finds out that she spent the whole time agonizing over it, and didn't do anything about it. She doesn't even know how to start a conversation with a man, she tells him. She tells him to cheer up, because she's going to have to cheer sensei up. She asks if she still counts as a "young lady" when she is 28. The narrator says that's a silly question, since she'll be quick to brag about being a young lady if she were her, but she also says that sensei is usually the one who messes things up in school. He says that he's been studying and working for twenty-eight years, and he wonders if it's really too late for her to fall in love. He wonders if she is an angel, or an angel that just fell to earth. She says that she was just flattering him, and that she would have knocked out any guy. He tells her that another student told her that he was 28 and barely on the "safe side," and she says that someone like her could never be so brave as him. He asks her if she could knock out anyone, and she replies that she could. He then tells her to thank him for being so cute, and says that maybe he should be a bit more confident. She thanks him again, and tells him that he is "the full measure of courage" . He promises to visit her in her dreams, and so she falls in love with him.
