About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the fire fighters wear a special protective garment called a sashiko, which means "sleeves" in Japanese. In other words, they wear a shirt that covers their entire body. We learn that this shirt was worn by the Japanese during the Edo period (1603-1868), when the country was under attack by the U.S. Fire Service. We also learn that in this time period, fire fighters wore special protective gear, such as the sashiko. In this case, the shirt covers the entire body, which is why it's called a "sleeve." The fire fighters are so excited to be back in Okayama that they start yelling at each other about how awesome it is that they're back in Japan. They're so excited that they can't wait to get back to Okayama. Okayama is such a big city that they don't even have a shuttle bus, so they have to take the shinkansen from Okayama to the next train station. The guys are psyched to see them again next year, but they've got a problem: there's not enough people on the train to take them all the way back. The guy who's supposed to be on the shuttle bus runs off to get some tissue to put on his nose, which he's been wearing all this time. We're not sure what's going on here, but we're guessing that this is because the guy's wearing a special shirt that he bought for his mom and sister. Okay, we'll just have to wait and see.
