About This Chapter
In this short scene, Ruchika and her daughter-in-law are on their way back to the mainland from the island of Illyria, where they have been living for the past 90 years. They are about to board the ship when Ruchikas sister, who is also the daughter of the ship's master, tells them that she is sorry that her father is so fuzzy. She tells them to stop being so "stubborn" and to stop trying to be like a "stron ger" . She says that she will kill the bear that her sister has been feeding to the old man. She also tells him that he should stop feeding the exhibits of the old woman, who does not need any food. He tells her that he will have her meet with his son, whom he calls "the sleepy eyes." He says that he has killed more than twice as many times as he has been killed, and that he thinks she is the same old woman as he was when he was a child. He asks her if she is afraid of her son getting killed if she survives, and she says that if she did not, her father would kill her. He adds that she should wait a few years to get back to her cause, and then she will be reborn as a new woman. He then asks her to lead him to the monk who will lead them to the place where they will meet the monk.
