About This Chapter
The next morning, Petruchio, Betta, Nestor, and Nestor's father, Agostino, arrive at the museum. They find the body of a model who has fallen off a scaffold. The model's name is "kane," and he was working on a painting with the painter, Pasquale, when the model fell off the scaffold. Agostino tells the group that the painter has gone missing and that the model is alive, hiding in the museum with the body. The group is shocked to learn that the body belongs to the duke of Badia, who is the patron of the museum, and that Nestor is the steward of the duke. The next day, the group learns that the original stone from the scaffold has been brought to the museum and that it is covered in blood. Nestor tells them that the man who made the stone for them is a guercino, a person who has renounced any ties to the Accademia. Alphonse, the owner of the shop where the body was found, is a client of Agostino's, and he is also a good client of the artist Pasquale. Three months later, however, it turns out that the guercini was actually the one who helped the painter Pasquale fall off the scaffolding. The conspirators decide to return to the pirate balthazar's ship, where they plan to kill him.
