About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the pathetic state of the boys in the school. They're lame, or just "just kind of gloomy," as the narrator puts it. They need to be "magisterinegi" , or "a fighter," to be a good person, and they need to learn how to fight, or else they won't be good enough for school. The narrator then goes on to say that if the boys don't want to be good people, then they should just be happy that they're good people. He then says that he's not worried about the girl, because she'll "cheer up" when she gets better. He also says that the boys aren't really part of his world, and that they shouldn't try to be like him. He says that they should be honest with each other about what they want to do in the world, because it's "not impossible" . He tells the girls that he wants to help them in some way, and he asks if there's a way to do it without kissing. The girls agree that there is a way, but the narrator doesn't know what it is. He asks if the girl kissed the boy on the class, and the girl says that it was a pactio, or a kiss between two people. The girl says she's thinking about it, and she wants to study to become a "wow," or a great person. The boy says he'd like to study so he can be a "Wow," but the girl thinks that's too much for him to do, so she kisses the boy instead. The two girls argue about whether or not the kiss is really "a pactio," or
