About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a conversation between Hiroshi and Hiroshi's mother, Ashihara. Hiroshi is the president of the club, and his mother is a member of the fifth generation of the family. The conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Hiroshi, who is eager to join the club. He tells his mother that he wants to be with her and the other members of the sixth generation, and he asks her if she knows her daughter's name from the tests she took when she was a child. She tells him that she does, but that she has no idea who her daughter is. She asks him if he knows her from the rumors about her. He says that he does, and she is smart enough to know that her name is from the test scores. He is surprised to learn that the club has a library with books like this, and that they have written compilations of the past members' books. He asks his mother if she would like to talk to him, but she says that she is not interested in listening to him. She says that it is rare for her to come to the club on a Sunday, and if she wanted to talk, she would be more than happy to listen. The chapter ends with Hiroshi talking about how he feels like something is off inside of him. He feels like he has never cared about anyone before, and how his attitude toward his mother will bug him all night. He wonders if she does not know what he is feeling, and asks if she thinks she does know what it feels like. He explains that he used to be the right-hand man of the yakuza, a Japanese mafia. He used to feel like he belonged to a family, and when he was the eldest child, he came to a point in his life when he realized that he was no longer the eldest son
