In this chapter, we learn that the "new star" is holding a modeling contest and that several of the missing girls are wearing the "pearl necklace" that the new star gave to each of her "models" . The new star is offering the winner "incredible resources" , and the winner will be rewarded with a trip to New York City. The two men agree to go with them to the modeling contest, but they are not sure whether they will be safe or not. The men explain that the necklace is a "piece of serpent scale, for marking" and that it was given to every model in order to make them the "marked preys" of the new "star." The men are sure that the police will not be able to find out about the necklace because it is not a pearl necklace, but an ordinary piece of "serpent scale." They are certain that if the police see the necklace, they will blame the clan for the necklace's existence.
