About This Chapter
"Well - oiled machine" The narrator complains that he's sunk all his money into the business. He's not sure what to do with himself. He wants to go to his daughter's college, but he can't figure out how to get there without spending a lot of money. He tells the bartender to tell his daughter that they're going to find out what's wrong with her. The bartender tells him that she's had a stomach flu, and that she threw up the night before. The narrator tells him to tie a rope around his hand and drop it to the floor. He says he'll have his and he'd totally get a later , but explain hes be nothing " feeling" . He goes on to tell the bartender that if anything goes wrong tonight, they'll find out it. He also tells him if he doesn't confess his love for Scott, there's no money left. He asks the bartender if he can give her a "big hand" , and the bartender says that's okay, but first he needs to check on the temperature. He adds that he saw her come in an hour ago, but that she came in just to see if she'd be ready for the night. He wonders what the deal is with the bartender and the "special client" Scottie. Scottie is his father's favorite, he says, and he wants to know why the bartender has been waiting so long for him to give him a big hand. He then asks if the bartender knows about the "sunshine gang" that was there, and when the bartender answers that they were, the narrator says that the suntans are gone.
