About This Chapter
"99 percent" The narrator tells us that it's April 1987, and he and his friend, Michael, are on their way back from the beach. They're bummed that they're leaving for Aunt Jane's house, but they think they'll make it back in time for the cold weather. Michael and the narrator talk about how much fun they've been having, and how much they'd like to go to the boo-german's to play orioles. The narrator says that he's accepted into art school in Baltimore, and he'd love to go back to the beach with his friend. He also tells the narrator that he hasn't gone to a game since he was "thanks" to the narrator, and that "adam" says that we're just looking for our "own truth." The narrator asks if he can introduce him to "that girl jane," and the two of them go off to meet up with Aunt Jane. Paul comes in to tell the narrator about his trip to Philadelphia, where he got a job as a magazine editor. He tells the story of how the editor told him that his job was to be "convince not realistic" . Paul says that's a great job, and thanks him for the job. Paul asks if the woman in the room is high on drugs, and eli says that she is. Paul tells her that she's "high on drugs" , and says that his friend locked the door to the room so that she wouldn't be able to get into it. Paul then tells eli that he and the other man were "brazen little brats," and that he feels bad for letting them down. He asks eli to open the door so that he can hear what's going on, and she tells him that she can hear Michael painting in his studio across the hall. Paul gives eli the painting, which he says he found after he chased her and Michael off. He says that the painting reminds him of his aunt, who he thinks would have liked to have the painting back. .
