About This Chapter
"Sorry" is the first line of the play's epigraph. It's from a police officer's report of an encounter between a man and a girl on a beach in Maryland. The officer tells the girl that he's headed back to her family's house because she's been hanging out with a "gangster" who "pulls peoples fingers off" her body. The girl tells the officer that she and her friend are having sex at the "sandcastle" , and the officer asks the girl if she'd like to have sex with the man. She says no, but the officer tells her that she'll have to tell her mom about it later. The cop tells her to go back to the hotel, but she refuses, saying that she wants to go to the beach with her friend instead. She tells the cop that she doesn't want her mom to know that her friend's father used to go out with the "dancers" . She asks the cop if he knows about Uncle Les's recent marriage to a black woman, and he says that's the reason he and his mom got involved in the first place. She gives the cop a long list of questions about her life, including "who, what, where, why, and when?" The cop asks if the girl is virgin, and she says no.
