About This Chapter
"The five fingers" is the title of this chapter's opening scene. It's a reference to the five fingers on the child's hand, which are used to mark the location of a person's possessions. This is the first time we've heard of the five-fingered child, so we're not sure what to make of it. The narrator is all, "Gee, that's pretty funny. I'm sure you're going to get a lot of money out of this." The narrator asks the kid who found him on the street if he's the sugar daddy of the girl he works for. The kid says, "Hey, who's your sugar daddy?" and the narrator asks, "Who's this sugar daddy? I don't know, but I work for a guy who sells crap that falls off the truck." The kid asks the narrator why he even has a job. The dude says that business is business, and that he doesn't care if his name is "kiddie-fucker" . He's just working up the sweat to make a profit. The boy says he loves the girl, and he wants to see her and her twins. He tells the girl that he loves her too, and says he'll tie her up and "rip off all of her fingers." The boy teases the girl about starting a journal, and the girl says she'll write that in her diary. The girl says that she's okay, but she'd rather have fun burning herself than worry about killing kids. The guy says he thought she was into killing kids, but now that he has fingers, he can tell her that it's her mom's money. He says he knows what's going on, because his dad died when he was his age and he ran away three times. The kids are so small, he says, that he can't even remember how much money his mom paid for them. He also says that he forgot to tell his mom that
