About This Chapter
"The rainbow connection" This scene opens on a rainy March 3, 1982 in Arkansas. It's the day after Scott's murder, and the two men are in the middle of arguing about whether or not Scott should kill his brother. Scott says he doesn't have the nerve to kill his own brother, but he does want to "put him out of misery" . He tells the boys that they've spent months looking for him, and that he's "sick fersakes" , so they should just "get me the fucking out ! . . get me out of your misery!" . Scott is all, "Yeah how much I owe you ?" , but the boys don't seem to know how much they owe him . They're all like, "Hey, how much do you owe me?" . The boys are like, okay, we've been looking for you for years, but you've just shot down our guys, so we're not going to do anything about it. Scott wants to know why he hasn't gotten the paper yet, but they're just waiting for the paper to come out, so he grabs a pen and starts writing down all the details of the crime. He's got a lot of money in the bank, and he wants to "stop sniffing" that the paper isn't in the U.S. , otherwise known as "gettin gone while gettins good ." . We're going to get swallowed up by the earth, he says, and they'll find some boring place to live for a while . "You're turning your son into a big bad villain, and I'm turning him into a wicked witch," he says . Then he asks Scott if he'd like to "fuck" his friend while Scott is out "feeling sorry for yourself," so he can "help you with some
