About This Chapter
"Here comes the circus" , the sheriff tells Miss Jessel. He tells her that he has decided to stay in his small town. He asks her if she would like to meet him, and she tells him that she would. The sheriff tells her about the night he found her, when he was thirteen years old. He had planned to impress her with his job, but the cold, wind, and rain made it difficult for him to do so. He says that he is staying in town because he cannot find anything else to do, and he is sure that the town will be free from wolves. He wonders if he could have killed her, too, but he knows that killing him would be too dangerous for her. He begs her to run away, but she refuses, saying that it is too dangerous to have anyone around.
