In this short scene, Deryn's father tells his son that it is time for Deryn to return to San Diego. He tells her that she is a "damnable baby" and that he will pay her fifty thousand dollars if she returns. Deryn tells her father that she has to go to her uncle's house, where she will be reunited with her daughter. She tells him that she wishes she hadn't had to kill a man. She says that she wants to plow a new pasture and that Deryn often gives her a few bucks.
