About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's feeling pretty good about the way things are going in his life. He's got lots of money, lots of friends, and lots of space to live on. He tells us his name is "amy racecar" and that his family is "really gone to nothing" except for the fact that they've seen him. Sob 1 doesn't recognize him, and sob 2 didn't even see him. The narrator says that the truth machine is telling the truth, and that's what they're hiding. They don't want to be caught, so they just want to keep it a secret. The truth machine tells them what they want to hear, but they can't do anything about it. They're afraid to tell the truth because they know it'll hurt their family. They want to protect their family, but the doctors are too expensive to help them anymore. Amy says that his father always loved him the best guard, and he'd rather die than let his grandmother die. He also says that he can tell that his grandmother's health is getting worse, because the doctors have to pay a fortune to treat her. He says that they should just give up before they get hurt, because they'll never be able to help him again. He adds that he loves his father, but he'll miss him the most. When the narrator tells him that the news of his father's death has gotten out, he says that it's just a "Hail of bullets" in his mind. He then says that America is about to go to war with the rest of the world, and the truth machines are about to shut them up. He wants to be with his country, but his father would be ashamed of him if he were to see him in this situation. He asks his father if he would marry him and take up his crusade now, so he can help the children.
