About This Chapter
In this short scene, we get a brief description of the scene that follows. It's set in a seaside diner in Woodlake, California, in October of 1983. The narrator tells us that he and his family have been looking for each other for over a year, but now that it's over, there's nothing left for them to do. They're back in the States, and they're happy to be back. The narrator says he's looking forward to going back to school, because it'll be fun to be a kid again. He tells the gang that he doesn't want to hang out with them tonight, because he'd rather be alone with Betty. The gang asks where Betty's coke is, and the narrator tells them to get the car and go to the inn. When the car arrives, Betty asks the gang to get her out of there. She tells them that she's tired and wants to go back to sleep, but they won't listen to her. She says she'll stay up with her one night when Betty is sick with worry, and she'd be happy to sleep with her if she didn't have to worry about her son. Betty says she wants to talk to her son, but the gang refuses to let her talk to him. She asks them to help her get out of the hotel, and when they don't help her, she screams at them. She calls them all "fuck" and tells them they've got to get off the hook. She's not going to leave her son alone with them, she says, because she wants him to be alone. She also tells them not to touch her, because if she did, she would have cut her open. She adds that she would've killed her son if she had found out what he was doing. She apologizes to the gang, and says she can let them go. She thanks them for their kindness, and then she tells them she thinks the cops are going to kill them. They say they'll meet her back in an hour, but Betty wants to know where the "dude named leslie" is. He's a "middle-aged hippie" who's just gotten some ice cream. She wants to meet him, too, but when she asks him where he is, he tells her to wait up. She then asks him to show her where "some guy named shift" is
