This chapter's epigraph is from the play's opening scene, in which a group of students, led by a fan, tries to save a fellow student from the clutches of a madman. The student, who has been blinded by the madman's blinding vision, is overcome with emotion as he realizes that he is the one who has saved his friend. He begs the other students to let him go, but they refuse, saying that they are all classmates and that the madman has asked them to do it for a reason. When the student finally relents and agrees to let the madman go, he tells the others that he wants to hear the reason for the fight.
