The chapter opens with a warning from the monster that they must devour fairy dust in 49 days, otherwise they will both be "refined and disappear from the world" . The monster tells the girl that he and her brother must eat at least one soul in order to survive. He tells her that he will need to kill a demon to get his fairy dust. The girl tells him that they have spent the night wandering around the forest looking for him. She warns him not to come to the forest because she will devour him if he does not leave. He is so hungry that he is willing to eat two fairy dusts to fill his stomach
