In this chapter, we find out that the narrator broke up with his ex-fiancee because he didn't want to marry her. He's now trying to get a loan from an agency to buy an apartment for himself and his new girlfriend. The narrator tells us that the distance between the two of them is getting closer and closer, and that he's worried that she'll start to control him too much. He tells her that she has a "great sense of inferiority" in her heart, which is why she's so afraid to lose her lover. She'll do whatever she can to keep him around, he tells her, and eventually, they'll break up.
