The next morning, Mr. Bledsoe complains to his wife that the lumber mill has been slow to ship lumber because of a shortage of supplies. He tells her that he's a generous man, and that he doesn't mind if the lumber company builds a cabin outside of town as long as it's kept away from the town. He says that if the company still wants to build a cabin, he'll be "gutted" by an "injun" before he trades with them. He also tells his wife to "conjure with a gypsy" and not to touch his son's hair. They're off to the circus, and he asks his wife if she's noticed any strange visitors in town recently. She says that she hasn't, but that she has noticed some "funny looking monks" passing through town recently, and she says that they were on a "pilgrimage" to a monastery in the town of Aston. She's not sure if they're religious or not, but she does know that they've passed through town a lot.
