About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Betheal's father, Gratiano, was once a priest and that he was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the one who took the life of Matthew, and he is now a priest in the Roman Empire. He is now the 12th apostle in the circle of the Sabbath. He says that he loves his father because they are kindred spirits and that they are destined to complete their destiny together. He tells his father that he will use his resurrection against him because he is still human, and that his fear of God is too great for him. He also says that his anger is directed at his wife, who he fears will use the book to his advantage. Gratio asks if they think the book bears any proof of its existence, and they say that they need to decipher the Latin doma porada, which is the Latin translation of the Book of Common Prayer. They are playing with "serious forces" here, they say, and there is no proof that the book is valid. They say that if they want to be tried for treason, they must prove that they have committed a crime. They also say that this is not a simple investigation, but a test of their faith. They must understand the man in order to defeat him
