In this chapter, the narrator tells the story of the "pillar of faith" . The pillar was supposed to imprison demons, but in reality, it was used to oppress revolutionaries. The narrator explains that the pillar was first discovered in the southwest U.S. and that it was later given to the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church was able to use the pillar as a weapon against the demons because they believed that they could lock them in the pillar. However, when they realized that they were actually locked inside the pillar, many of the men involved in the project committed suicide. The only way to stop the unleashing of the demon is to find a way to lock the pillar shut.
