About This Chapter
The narrator and the Governess finally arrive at the orphanage. The Governess asks the narrator if he knows how to drive, and the narrator tells her that he does. They go to the orphanage and find that the place is burned to the ground. The orphanage has not been rebuilt in many years, so they can find some clues. They decide to wait until the next morning to explore the attic. They find the lighthouse, which was burned eight years ago. The lighthouse was surrounded with concrete, so the fire could not reach the orphanage at all. The narrator wonders what was the purpose of burning the lighthouse. He says that he used to go there every night when he was sleeping, but the adults would not let him near it. He would fall asleep watching the lighthouse and then go back to sleep. When he woke up, he saw a shadow in the wall. He thinks that it is not his shadow. He tells the narrator that he has a headache and wants to go riding a bike. His parents abandoned him, so his mom gave him up. Everyone thought that they could live happily ever after, but he knows that the orphanage is not peaceful.
