In this short scene, Jo is overcome with happiness at the thought of going home early for the day. She tells herself that she has to go home because of her lover, and that she should not have come home late because of his proposal. She then tells him that she did not say that they were going out, but that she refused his proposal because it would have been too burdensome for her. He tells her that going out would not make much difference in their relationship, since they do not know each other well enough to know that they are lovers.
