The Governess and the Governess's son, chiharu, arrive at the house, and the child's father, nanjou, introduces his son. The child, however, is not well, and his father has told him to go back to his room first thing in the morning. When the father is not home, the child is left alone with his mother, who is very kind to the child. The two discuss the nature of chiharu's relationship with the other children, and decide that the child should be allowed to play outside, even if it means that he will have to wear dirty clothes.
