In this chapter, we learn that the banished monk, Shunkan sama, has been living on a small island off the coast of the mainland. He was granted amnesty by the authorities, but he was left on the island alone. When the boat departed, he clung to it as it left the island, but the authorities pulled him away. The monk is now no longer a human being, and the only thing he can offer his master is a promise that he will serve him until the end of his days on earth.
