About This Chapter
When the narrator wakes up, he finds that his voice has stopped speaking to him. He feels like he's lost his energy and that he'd become invisible. He asks if he can touch him, and he doesn't know how to explain it to someone who's awake. He tells the narrator that he was born and grew up in this town, and that his father commuted there during college. He even gave him a piece of paper to give back to him when he died. The narrator says that he didn't want to refuse, but after he died, he had to stand on the hill watching the fire that was to burn his father's body to death. He says that the human brain can be an "amazing thing" . He thinks that because he was always there for him, he was able to stay away from the "rock bottom" that would happen if he got too close to it. He also says that if he were to fall asleep, he could feel someone touching him and he would bolt awake. When he asks if she's falling asleep, she says she isn't, but that she might fall asleep and talk to him about something. She tells him that she wants to be with him forever, even when he can't see her. She says that she was always right by his side when he told her about his happiness, and she asks him to kiss her and tell her that he is happy. He kisses her and says he'll work up his courage to say it. She gasps and runs out of energy.
