We learn that Mr. and Mrs. Lan are not really her husband and son, but that they treat her with kindness, respect, and goodwill. This is why she has decided to stay at the Temple and help Mr. Lan look after his family. This must be karma, she says, because she is very pious and will find acceptance wherever she goes
