About This Chapter
Haruko tries to convince herself that she's the one who's responsible for the death of her sister, but she doesn't have the guts to admit that it's her fault. Haruko's sister, Hatumi, has said that her sister would never kill herself, and that she was worried that she would be blamed for her sister's death. She's also worried that her own sister would be the one to blame for the murder of her dead sister. The narrator points out that even if the family's cord were still attached to the body, it wouldn't be able to be switched for someone else's. He also points out how hard it would be for the police to track down a dead woman, especially if they were looking for someone who had committed suicide. Finally, the narrator points to the fact that when Haruko was accused of murder, her sister did nothing to defend her sister. It's hard to believe that a sister would commit suicide, but that's what Haruko did. She didn't want anyone to think that she killed herself, so she made it seem like she was a ghost. She wanted to make everyone think that her death was the end of the world, and she wanted her sister to think the same way. She dressed up as a dead body and made it look like she'd been killed by a beam of steel, so that everyone would think she was the real person who killed her. She also wore a wig and a fancy dress, which would make her even more attractive to the detective. The killer, however, swung his fake girder at the detective, who froze for a second, and the killer was able to kill him without a struggle.
