About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a soliloquy by a woman who identifies herself as the wife of the head of a district in the northern part of Japan. The woman tells her husband that he is the leader of the district and that he has stolen all of the money from the region. She tells him to get out of her way because she is the do, and she tells him that she will never show him honor again if he ever sells women to the K family again. The man who identifies himself as the boss at Kishida tries to explain that he made a mistake in closing the gate to the house because he had too many tubs of water. He tells the woman that he had noticed a spy tailing after him, and he had suspected that the spy was pursuing him. He had left the boxes of water at the gate because he thought that the hired men had run away when they saw the mask. He has been looking for the seven women and has found them. He says that if he had gone after the mask, he would not have been able to defeat the enemy because he knows how to fight.
