About This Chapter
This chapter opens in the backyard of the banhosan temple in the city of Tokaiji, in northeastern Japan. It is forbidden to eat garlic or alcohol in the temple grounds, so the priest of the temple, who is also a monk, is forced to hide in the bushes. The priest tells the monk that he has gotten used to the area, but that he fears that the enemy will see him there and suspect him of being a member of the Tokaijin. The monk says that he went to the temple the night before to pay for the bell that he had to wear at the convent, and that he tried to tease the monks out with the bell, but many of them were missing an eye. He decides to wear the mask of akinari, the monk's wife, to protect himself from the enemy. He asks the priest if he allowed Hiroto to escape, and the priest replies that Hiroto could have killed him if he were one of the seven women who left the convent. He says that no one from the shiba-ichiganbo faction could have beaten Hiroto so soundly, and if Hiroto was one of them, he would have killed Hiroto as well. He also says that there are seven women left in the convent who have the same skill as Hiroto, and they are sure that they were hired to get revenge on Hiroto. He then says that they are getting nowhere in the fight and that they should snap now. He tells the monks to squeeze dash smack, pan thud stab, squeeze wipe again, and he will continue their lessons.
